Depression
Have you ever read a story that was so interesting and all ? Well i have, the name of the novel was The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger. This novel got my attention from the start because the way it made me understand and visualize every scene with it's details. The theme i saw that stood out the most was depression. I chose this theme because Holden always seem to be depressed and lonely. This novel is about a sixteen year old kid that as a young age questions life as well as whats going around him. He doesn't seem to get along with people. He doesn't have a stable place to stay.
Depression is one of the most important themes in the book. He states ""Here's what he said: The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one," Mr. Antolini, his English teacher, seems to be the only person in the book that truly figured out Holden. In his opinion, Holden is fighting a lost battle, as he tries to hold on to his innocence and deny the contradictions of the adult World. As he can't stand to fit in a place, he falls into depression and isolation
Holden states “I felt so depressed, you can’t even imagine. What I did, I started talking, sort of out loud to Allie”, Allie was Holden's younger brother, Allie's traumatic death was the cause of Holden’s depression, especially since he had a close relationship with him. This quote shows what Holden’s character is like, because as soon as he is alone, he thinks about his dead brother and it conjures up uncontrolled emotions for him. He feels like if its his fault for what happen for his brother. This brings him depression.
Holden states “Even all the whory-looking blondes weren’t around anymore, and all of a sudden I felt like getting the hell out of the place. It was too depressing,” it shows when he is alone, he makes excuses such as the place being a crumby hotel and how that depressed him, when in reality being alone was the root of his depression because he had no one to talk to. He cant find anyone to talk or that might want to be with him. He sees that his lonely and that nobody cares. His feeling depressed because theres noone he can tell stuff to.
In conclusion Holden is always feeling depressed because of his social life. The way he cant seem people to understand him. He also sees that he's different, that people are annoying and he doesn't get. He doesn't have friends since his always moving, we can also infere that his not close with his parents. This all makes the depression theme because it all falls through, he can't seem to trust or communicate because he never had the best communication with his parents and friends. He isolates himselve from everyone and everything.
