Jerome David Salinger was born on January 1, 1919, in New York City, J.D. Salinger was a literary. Salinger was the youngest of two children and only boy born to Sol Salinger, ran a thriving cheese and ham import business, and his Scottish born wife Miriam. At a time when mixed marriages of this sort were looked as a disdain. Miriam's non-Jewish background was so well hidden, at the age of 14 Salinger learned of his mother's roots. He attended McBurney School, Valley Forge Military School, NY University. Then attended Ursinus College and Columbia University. His landmark novel, The Catcher in the Rye, set a new course for literature in post-WWII, this novel took him to fame. His teacher, Whit Burnett, was not only a teacher he was also an editor from the story magazine. Burnett incourage Salinger to keep writing, since he knew that he was talented. Salinger took part in the military, in the years 1942-1944. In 1966 he married Claire Douglas, but then she demanded a divorce. Six years later, he met Joyce Maynard, a college freshman. In 1953, Salinger only publishing one new story before his death. He died on January 27, 2010 in Comish New Hampshire.
